EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
