Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
