Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
