Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
