Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
